An art curator tasked with archiving a mythic dissident discovers she was never the archivist. She was always the archive.
In a post-utopian city where peace is indistinguishable from erasure, Yu is a novice curator with an approved past and a carefully maintained distance from it. Compliant, quiet, rebuilt, she is exactly what the State intended her to be. When she is commissioned to archive a series of underground comics centred on Ikkyu, a mythic figure of systemic defiance, it reads as routine work. It is not.
The deeper Yu moves into the Ikkyu material, the less her composure holds. The comics do not radicalise her so much as recognise her, surfacing something she had buried well enough to forget she owned it. What spills out is involuntary: Avant-Garde songs, a voice she was supposed to have surrendered, returning without permission. Around her, a world is quietly reorganising itself — a city where civil servants are beginning to think for themselves, where a cultish organisation pursues Ikkyu for its own authoritarian ends, where a government agent develops an inconvenient conscience. When evidence suggests Ikkyu may be less myth than mission, and that the mission originated somewhere beyond human intention, Yu’s archival project becomes something else entirely. In a city engineered for total oversight, she was never the archivist. She was always the archive. And something has been waiting for her to open.
